Eating Out and Family Occasions

Social interactions are limited by concerns about becoming ill, unwanted attention, and increased financial costs. The age group 30-39 were most concerned about becoming ill with 86% reporting this fear  restricted socialising and eating out. Overall, 76% of participants were restricted by fear of illness. Unwanted attention accounted for 53% of participants restricting their socialising, with the age group 40-59 experiencing this most frequently at 57%.

Over 88% of participants reported that they often go hungry at social events. Eating out at family and friends’ homes was rarely a relaxing experience, with just 7.6% of all participants expressing they were very relaxed when doing so, and only 2.2% of participants reporting being unaffected by their CD diagnosis. More than 90% of participants reported caution or anxiety.
